Posters

The Spanish Civil War produced a number of posters. Some were fine works of art while others were pure propaganda. The posters also depicted the brutality of war, particularly posters like ‘If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next’, which graphically depicted the fact that the fascists deliberately targeted children. It is the fascist mentality to target the weak and vulnerable, and we see this in every age.

The poster featured here is the famous, “¡No pasarán!” – “they shall not pass”. The phrase was used by British anti-fascists during the Battle of Cable Street in October 1936 and famously by Dolores Ibárruri Gómez during the Siege of Madrid.
