BBC2 was broadcast on 625 lines, which made colour television possible. First up, on 1 July 1967, an outside broadcast in colour of the tennis at Wimbledon. Partly due to expense, colour television developed slowly – by the end of 1969 there were only 200,000 colour tv sets in the whole of Britain.
