In November 1683, my 9 x great grandparents John Bevan and Barbara Aubrey arrived in Pennsylvania from Llantrisant, Wales and helped to establish the Welsh Tract. More settlers arrived in the 1680s and the colony developed. Land changed hands at regular intervals as some settlers thrived while others struggled.
John owned various plots of land in Merion, Marple Township and Haverford Township. He was a major player in the colony’s development, making several sales in right to the 2,000 acres (3.1 square miles) he bought from William Penn.
In 1687 Thomas Holme drew this map of Pennsylvania. The Welsh Tract appears to the left of centre.
